How To Eat Tonkatsu like a Japanese - Tonkatsu by Ma Maison @ Publika

It's not easy to understand the Japanese culture, let alone on food. There's always a rule to taking Japanese food or else you'll just offend/insult them unintentionally. Recently caught up with a friend and decided to try out this Tonkatsu place in Publika (LG floor). Have always passed by this place and just perfect to try this out as had recently been having Italian, Korean and Thai food. To be honest, Tonkatsu has never been my thing - I try to stay away from deep fried meat, but decided to give it a go here. It really changed my perspective for super awesome fried food minus the guilt!

Tonkatsu (豚カツとんかつ or トンカツ, pork cutletis a popular Japanese dish that is deep fried breaded pork cutlet. The cuts normally served would be the loin or the fillet, and with shredded cabbage on the side. For friends who are not pork lover, you can try out their chicken dishes. Equally good.

If you're not sure what to order, rule of thumb is to always ask the staff for recommendations. Got the signature Tonkatsu dish set which came with rice, tonjiru (soup) and pickles. Price is about RM28.90 for this set (exclude tea).

These can be intimidating, but don't be. I was unsure of them too, till I saw the how-to guide. It  just made noobs like me enjoy my food without memalukan diri sendiri (saving yourself from embarassment)!

Oroshi - can be taken directly or with the Tamari dressing. Depending on your preference, you may choose to add or decrease amount of dressing.

Tsukemono (Pickle) - Recommended to be taken with rice, but I preferred mine as it is. You may ask for free refills.

Cabbage - Goes perfect with the sesame dressing and don't forget to ask for the free refills. Just adds a clean palette before and after your tonkatsu. Yumzz

Tonjiru (Miso soup with pork) - Also refillable

Ordered the Japanese roasted barley tea, which is pretty similar to the Korean roasted brown rice tea. Increases your appetite instantly with its clean, rich taste.

There's also instruction on how to take your Tonkatsu (was excited about the dish forgot to take a snapshot) - there are 3 different sauces (check out the triple sauce plate). You're supposed to dip each piece, from right to left. For that tangy twist, you can also dip your Tonkatsu in mustard. Don't forget to sprinkle sesame seed on your rice.

A meal like this cost about RM30+ including tea. Other than pork, they do serve chicken katsu.

Super Oishi!! おいしい
Be sure to check out this place if you're not sure where to dine next time. Their pork fillet is just fresh, juicy and batter not oily nor soggy.
