Cure Dry Cough (for real) for under RM10

Gosh, great news for ya'll. Finally, I've gotten better after more than a month of dry coughing! Past attempt of Steamed Orange was a big fail. Bumped into a friend who recommended Bird's Nest. Thanks but no thanks to GST, I remembered having this great ingredients in the pantry and decided to give this cheap alternative to cure my dry cough.

Hari ini, I present to you one of the best remedy for your dry cough ---> White Fungus Soup.

The ingredients are so simple, they're basic staples in any Chinese kitchen.

1) Chinese Dates (4-5)
2) White Fungus (One bouquet)
3) Goji Berries (1 pinch)
4) Sugar (to taste)

Serving: 4-5 bowls

Known to nourish the body, has anti-inflammatory property, heals dry cough and strengthens weak lungs. Just what I needed!

Dead cheap and you can get them at any market or Asian stores or even the Chinese 'drug store' aka herbs store. White fungus can go for RM2-5, depending on size of bouquet. Goji berries and dates can be purchased by pre-packed packages or by weight and is really affordable.

Before making this soup, you need to soak the white fungus. It doesn't take long for it to soften and expand, approximately 5-10 minutes. You get a very soft, gel-like films of romantic white petals. Cut into into smaller bite size pieces.

There's two ways to make this 1) Over stove or 2) Slow cooker. Just add lotsa water and white fungus into pot and heat over stove. Add dates. It's expected to reduce to at least half and you can add more water if you like. Leave goji berries to the last 10-15 minutes so that you won't overcook them.

Cooking Time: At least 2 hours. I'd recommend to cook it for 2-3 hours long so that you get soft, melt-in-your-mouth white fungus - indication that it's cooked long enough. Plus, the longer you leave it in, the soup will build up in flavor. Add in rock sugar but you can substitute with white sugar too if you don't have that in your pantry.

Tadah!! So, the best thing about this soup is that you can have it warm or cold. If you're making bigger servings, you can keep em in the fridge. I have one bowl every night and within a week my dry cough was gone. Even without having dry cough, this is a refreshing soup/dessert to have especially when it's hazy these days during the hot summer season.

Try it peepz! Happy making. :)
