Aside from the tycoons, cheap alcohol & Gua Niah, here's one great reason to visit Miri - FOOD! If you followed my previous entry - What to Eat in Miri, here's part 2 to complete your gastronomic experience when you're down in the land of the oil - Miri!
Breakfast/Lunch: Sarawak Laksa
No. 28 Stall (Opposite Permaisuri Imperial Shopping Mall)
Original Kuching Laksa (RM6 for medium & RM8 for large)
No. 28 Stall (Opposite Permaisuri Imperial Shopping Mall)
Original Kuching Laksa (RM6 for medium & RM8 for large)
Madam Wee used to conquer the Miri Laksa biz, but this is the real deal these days. Claimed to be the original makers of the Kuching Laksa, I knew I had to try this out with my sis & dad. As a small eater, I picked the medium sized portion for only RM6. Loved, loved, loved that the ingredients are simply fresh - juicy fresh prawns, crunchy bean sprouts, well cooked noodles, just-so-nice egg strips and not to mention the herbal-ly tang curry laksa broth to complete your palette! Don't get me wrong, that ain't just your normal chilli paste, but freshly made paste to bring this laksa up a notch. Try it and you'll love it!
Tea/Snack: Lao Po Dou Hua
RM4.50 - Green Tea flavored Tau Fu Fa
Pujut 6 (New Shoplot area)
So this area in Pujut 6 has been booming with new eateries, from Chinese, fusion to Korean here. So this dainty place is new and shop name is pretty catchy (Wifey's Bean Custard). A little limited cause they were serving two types of food - original & green tea tau hua.
Loved the personalized art mural!
Yummy soft green tea tau hua.
Tea & Snack Time: Rojak, Sotong Kangkung & Cendol
No. 1 Stall
Behind Sin Liang Supermarket, City Centre
Rojak, ABC & Cendol are tea time must have, especially for those who have not tried the Sarawak version.
Another local favourite - Sotong Kangkung. You can customize your portion based on RM or pax, with yummy rojak sauce and generous serving of cuttlefish. Kangkung lightly blanched for that green freshness.
Sarawak rojak - I've tried and still not gotten used to Semenanjung rojak, as their ingredients are limited. Miri rojak, on the other hand has savoury and sweet tang. Includes slices of fried tofu, sengkuang, cucumber, cuttlefish and Sarawak pineapple drizzled in sweet rojak sauce with abundant peanut crumbs that will just excite your taste palette. Price varies according to RM and pax.
Dinner: Chinese Dishes
Wu Fook
Pujut 6 (New Shoplot Area)
Most Miri Cafe/Restaurants serve pretty decent dishes, but a must have in Miri would be bilin/bidin (local fern). Try it with belacan and you'll never regret!
(L-R Clockwise: XO Tofu, Asam Fish & Bidin with red wine sauce)
Lunch: Sang Yuk Mien @RM8
Marina New Shop lot Area, Miri Town
Sang Yuk Mien in fact isn't a Sarawak dish but from her sister state, Sabah. This brand new place recently opened up in Miri and hails from Sabah. Sang Yuk Mien is known for its delicious broth of pork meat served with your choice of noodles. Though it looked great on photograph, maybe mee hun isn't the best choice for this dish. Suggest to go for the standard noodle.
Finished the whole bowl of soup, with thinly sliced pork meat cooked perfectly.
Lookout for this place if you're in this area.
Sorry peepz for the late post as the past month had been a crazy one - suffered shoulder injury, wrist sprain and very bad case of skin allergy. Promise to write more, thanks for being patient - you're awesome! XOXO, Aud
